Satellite components instead of consumer electronics: OHB acquires TechniSat plant in Schöneck im Vogtland

Preparation for industrialized satellite production

Bremen/Daun/Schöneck, October 31, 2025 – Technology and space company OHB has acquired TechniSat's manufacturing plant in Schöneck im Vogtland. The official announcement was made today in the presence of Michael Kretschmer, Minister President of the Free State of Saxony, Dirk Panter, Saxony's Minister for Economic Affairs, and other guests of honor.

Kretschmer said at today's event: "OHB's takeover of the TechniSat plant is excellent news for the Vogtland region and the whole of Saxony. It secures jobs and strengthens our aerospace industry. It combines two areas of expertise: Saxony's know-how in electronics manufacturing and excellence in satellite technology. I would like to thank OHB for its confidence in Saxony as a business location."

Preservation of local jobs

Dirk Panter, Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs, visited Schöneck in August 2025 and promised to support the preservation of local industrial jobs. Commenting on the takeover by OHB, Panter said: "Today is a good day for the Vogtland region and for Saxony as a whole. I am delighted that OHB has chosen Schöneck as its location. This will preserve industrial jobs, added value and expertise there. The takeover will help to strengthen the aerospace industry in Saxony and, in particular, promising start-ups. Future activities in Schöneck can also make a significant contribution to the technological independence and competitiveness of the German and European space industry. In addition, the entire economic region of southwestern Saxony is expanding its mix of industries, making it even more competitive and crisis-proof overall. I would like to express my special thanks to Professor Andreas Knopp and his wife Mirjam Knopp from Bad Elster. Their tireless personal commitment and strong attachment to Saxony have contributed significantly to this positive solution."

Stefan Kön, Managing Director of TechniSat Digital GmbH, added: "We took over the Schöneck site 33 years ago, steadily expanded it, and successfully manufactured entertainment and reception electronics for our customers here. Unfortunately, the conditions for manufacturing our products in Germany have not developed in our favor in recent years. We therefore decided in the summer to relocate production to our plants in Poland. We are therefore all the more pleased to have found a buyer in OHB who will continue to operate the site and offer employees the opportunity to continue working in Schöneck. This aspect was particularly important to us in our search for a buyer and in the negotiations. We are convinced that OHB will continue to run the plant successfully and with foresight."

For OHB, the planned takeover of the site is a preparation for industrial satellite and component manufacturing. Due to the growing demand for satellites for various civil and military applications, capacity is needed for the series production of suitable electronic components for space use. The choice of a production site in Germany is a conscious decision on the part of OHB, aimed at establishing sovereign national supply chains for critical satellite components.

Saxony as the European center for microelectronics

Saxony is considered the European center for microelectronics and has outstanding expertise in research, development, and production in this field. These established competencies form the ideal basis for entering into the serial production of space components and successfully transforming the region's economic structure.

Marco Fuchs, CEO of OHB SE, said: "We are delighted about the opportunity to gain a foothold in Saxony. Modern space activities, particularly satellite constellations, demand a shift in thinking toward entirely new scales of operation. This means that we need manufacturing expertise. The employees at TechniSat in Schöneck have the know-how to enter series production for the space industry without any major detours. We are looking forward to reviving the Vogtland region's space tradition in a whole new way in the future."
