“New Space” approach secures construction of 20 satellites for the EPS Sterna mission – the largest satellite contract to date for the Swedish space sector. Fast, precise, cost efficient: OHB Sweden, a subsidiary of the space technology group OHB, has won a major contract worth EUR 248 million for the development and construction of 20 small satellites. They will form the new European satellite constellation “EUMETSAT Polar System-Sterna,” or EPS Sterna for short. The foundation for this is the Arctic Weather Satellite (AWS), which OHB Sweden successfully placed in orbit as a demonstrator more than a year ago. The OHB SE subsidiary developed the small satellite on behalf of the European Space Agency ESA in record time, using a deliberately chosen New Space approach. Only three years passed between contract award and launch. For the first time, the Swedish space company will now build a large constellation.
The first data and images from Europe’s newest weather satellite were unveiled today at the European Space Conference. The satellite, known as Meteosat Third Generation Sounder (MTG‑S1), was developed and built by OHB System AG on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA). Equipped with a highly advanced infrared sounding instrument, MTG‑S1 delivers three-dimensional profiles of atmospheric temperature and humidity from its geostationary orbit 36,000 km above Earth.
Two new satellites of the European Galileo navigation system were successfully launched into space today at 06:01 CET (02:01 local time) from the spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.
– OHB Sweden, part of the German OHB SE Group, and a leading European space technology provider announced that it has secured a major contract from SWISSto12, one of the world’s fastest-growing aerospace companies and leading manufacturer of advanced satellite systems and radiofrequency (RF) products.
"A strong signal from Bremen for the future of European space flight! We are delighted that the ESA Ministerial Council meeting in Bremen has approved a total budget of €22.1 billion for the next three years. This represents a further increase and is in line with the amount requested by the ESA Director General. With a contribution of over €5 billion, Germany is confirming its leading role in Europe and is once again the largest contributor. In doing so, Federal Minister Dorothee Bär is underlining Germany's leading role in space activities.
