Service agreement for the Paranal observatory in Chile expanded

Santiago de Chile May 17, 2016. Chilean-based MT Mecatronica SpA, a subsidiary of OHB SE (Prime Standard, ISIN DE0005936124) has once again won the international tender for the provision of maintenance and engineering-support services to European Southern Observatory's Paranal astronomical observatory. The contract for services to a total value of € 3 million runs for three years and includes an option for a two-year extension.

The MT Mecatronica team already won the ESO call for tenders for a service agreement for the most modern observatory in Chile's Atacama Desert in 2012. Their excellent work has now led to this follow-up contract with more responsibilities in the fields of engineering and security systems, and an increase in the number of staff from 20 to 31.

The Paranal observatory is located on Cerro Paranal mountain in Chile's Atacama Desert, about 120 km south of the city of Antofagasta. With its Very Large Telescope (VLT), the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) and the survey telescopes VISTA and VS, it is ESO's largest and most modern optical observatory.
