Environment

From an environmental perspective, our key focus areas are climate change mitigation and adaptation as well as space safety.

Climate change mitigation and adaptation

We develop and manufacture Earth observation satellites and ground segments that collect and process environmental data. This satellite-based data has a societal benefit by expanding our understanding of the Earth system and thus supporting measures for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Examples

  • Contribution to greater transparency in climate protection: In the SPACE SYSTEMS business segment, OHB System AG is developing a third satellite on behalf of ESA for the CO2M greenhouse gas monitoring mission as part of Copernicus. In the future, the data obtained will provide reliable information on emissions from individual countries, regions and cities.
  • Contribution to adaptation to climate change: In the DIGITAL business segment, OHB Digital Connect GmbH is implementing the Urban View Demonstrator project on behalf of ESA. It supports cities in developing instruments for detecting urban heat islands and monitoring urban nature on the basis of Earth observation data.
  • Contribution to the mobility transition: In the DIGITAL business segment, OHB Teledata GmbH is driving forward the digitalization and electrification of rail infrastructures and is contributing to safe, efficient and lower-emission mobility with its technologies.

At the same time, we are working to make our own contribution to the global climate goals. We calculate our greenhouse gas footprint in accordance with the GHG Protocol and publish it in our annual Sustainability Report. In 2025, we adopted a group-wide decarbonization strategy that includes targets and corresponding measures to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. We plan to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions in Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 35% by 2030 and by 63% by 2035 compared to the base year 2025.

In addition, we analyze physical risks due to climate change and climate-related transition risks and their impact on our business model.

Further information can be found in our Sustainability Report 2025 in the chapters “Climate Risk Analysis” and “Climate Change”.

Space safety

The usability of space as a shared resource is a basic prerequisite for our business model. We therefore consider the increasing amount of space debris in Earth orbit to be a major ecological challenge of strategic importance. Space debris refers to the remnants of human activity in space, such as satellites that are no longer functional, burned-out rocket upper stages, and debris from collisions in orbit.

We develop technologies to reduce space debris and promote a circular economy in space. These technologies create the basis for a resilient infrastructure in orbit that not only ensures the safe operation of today’s space missions, but also enables the long-term use of orbital resources.
